Silently, they sneaked away from the party, from the noise. Slowly they climbed up the small hill where they watched the party from a far. It was not enjoyable for the both of them. So they decided to talk, against the circumstances. They used to date for a while but it didn’t work out. There was miscommunication and things just fell apart.
“Why did we split in the first place?” Angel had asked. Tonight, they both had a wonderful time in each other company and mainly kept to themselves. It was exactly like old times. Except for the fact that Alex had a new girl in his life. No longer did they feel the uncomfortable silence when they first broke up. “We just didn’t get along well as a couple.” Alex muttered softly, “But we are still best friends.” A gust of cold wind in the summer night caused Angel to shiver slightly. He caught hold of her hands and held it tightly. Immediately, she felt slight tingles running through her body as they finally had physical contact after so long. But friends don’t do that... She thought as she gazed at his handsome profile when he looked down at the party.
It was an extremely quiet except for the soft music playing in the background from the party. Being interested in music, she called at him and asked him to listen. She held out her hands and slowly grasped his. At first, he was reluctant to hold on to her but as the song progressed into the chorus, he held her tight. The lyrics of the song were beautiful. My life is in your hands; my heart is in your keeping... She had longed for him to realise that she still loved him. That she still didn’t want to give up. He felt her emotions flowing as the song continued. I’m never without hope, not when my future is with you... At that point, he realised that he had subconsciously interlaced fingers with Angel. Her eyes were still closed as she continued flowing with the music. My life is in your hands, and though I may not see clearly... He looked at her when he felt her watching him and he took her in his arms. I will lift my voice and sing, ‘cause your love does amazing things, I trust in you; my life is in your hands. He saw the tears welling up in her eyes as he embraced her. She wept silently into his chest, wishing that they were still together but she knew better. She was not the type that will chase after guys that were already taken. And she did not want to start now. By that time, her tears were rolling down as she continued to look away from him. I trust in you; my life is in your hands. The song slowly faded away and he saw her mouthing the last words to him. His heart skipped a few beats as he moved further away from her.
He wiped her eyes gently and gave her a kiss on the cheek. His lips lingered a little longer then it should and he pushed her face as he look into her eyes. “Do you want it?” He muttered, staring at her lips. “Friends do not do that...” she continued, unable to look at him anymore. Right now, she wanted to run away and never look back before she does something irrational. “We are more than just friends, Angie... You know that.” She shook her head, saying that he had a girlfriend and that he should be loyal. Slowly, he sighed and sat on the grassy slopes and indicated for her to do the same.
For a moment, he looked lost in thought as he tried to find the words to explain himself. The next few minutes passed by in silence as she waited for him to start speaking first. While looking out at the view, he muttered, “We broke up last night. You were right. We were never as good as when you and I were together. She didn’t understand that I still loved you.” He paused, his green eyes changing hues, giving his emotions away. “We shouldn’t have given up and let it all go. We should have worked things out. I was stupid and foolish to believe that anyone else could have replaced you. I was afraid of speaking to you after that argument.” With that, he took hold of her hands and pulled her closer to him. On impulse, she laid her head softly on his chest, wishing that this moment in time could be frozen.
“But what if things don’t work out? I can’t go through the pain I felt these past few months again, Al.” She moved away from him and started to get up. “You don’t know how hard it was for me, seeing you with someone else. I’m finally over it. Over you. Why now? Do you think that this is just a game? Cause I don’t. And I definitely don’t find this funny.” Slowly, she started to climb down the hill. Her shoe slipped on some sand and she fell. Immediately, Alex ran to her and helped her up. At first, she thought that she could get up by herself and refused his help but the pain in her ankle denied her the chance. The stress build up inside her frail body escaped as she wept into him for the second time that night.
“I promise not to hurt you again. I want this to last as much as you do. And I am serious.” Alex muttered. While he moved in to kiss her and this time, she didn’t resist. After a while, he gasped, “I love you.” Her eyes bore into his and she hesitated. He pushed her hair back from her face and gave her another kiss. “I. Love. You.” He repeated after each kiss. They lay on their backs, looking up at the stars after a while, Angel still not replying him. She wanted so much to say that she still loved him. Her heart had soared when he finally said those words to her. “They’re beautiful.” She whispered, referring to the stars. “Yes, you are.” She turned to find him and found him looking directly at her.
He held her hand and gave her a small kiss on her cheek. “I don’t want to force you into anything. Just take your time. I will wait. Even if it takes a lifetime because you are worth it.” His lips were still lingering on her cheek while he said that and she turned her head towards him, their mouths meeting. “I love you so much, Alex.” At those very words, he hugged her tightly and showered her with kisses. The both of them knew their mistakes in the past and vowed silently never to repeat them again. For they do not want to lose each other anymore.
